Meal Delivery
Meals on Wheels
The Chicago Department on Aging administers the "Meals on Wheels" service to deliver hot meals to older Chicagoans. Homebound seniors who are unable to prepare their own meals, or lack a support system to prepare meals on their own, may qualify to participate in this program. Chicago residents age 60 or older may call to have an assessment set-up with a Social Worker. The Social Worker will determine the meal requirements based on the senior's ability to use a microwave to heat frozen meals and to control portions. If a senior is in a crisis situation, the department will implement an emergency start-up of meal delivery prior to the Social Worker's assessment visit.
Seniors may choose from three different types of diets (regular, low sodium, diabetic) to more widely address the various nutritional needs. The meals are delivered up to seven days a week and come hot, cold, or frozen, depending on the case manager's assessment of the senior's needs. Seniors may qualify for one or two meals per day. The suggested donation is $1.50 per meal.

Seattle Sutton's Healthy Eating
Seattle Sutton delivers healthy, freshly prepared meals twice weekly. The meals are low in fat, low in cholesterol and calorie controlled. Seattle Sutton, R.N., B.S.N., started this meal delivery service after finding she was providing nutritional information to patients of her husband's medical practice who were trying to lose weight for health or medical reasons. Now more than half of their clients are seniors who may live alone or need special meals to comply with dietary requirements. All meals are freshly prepared. No frozen or dried foods are used. Because they offer an assortment of five different weekly menus, you will only repeat meals 10 times a year. The cost is about $100.00 per week for a complete daily meal package.
