Lisa Wilkins
What made you interested in working as a Caregiver?
I started in California where I worked at a nursing home over 25 years ago. When I came back to care for my mother, I stayed in the field helping of people.
How long have you been with Chicagoland Caregivers?
A little over a year and I have done on-going and fill-in's jobs with all different types of clients & conditions.
What did you do before coming to Chicagoland Caregivers?
I was a Jet Engine Mechanic in the Air Force. I was the first black woman in Chicago who went into Mechanic program in North Dakota and I also served in Germany for 4 years.
What is an interesting story/situation about a client through us?
I have liked so many of the clients that I have worked with - special determination & special man in his late 90's, who had a very strong spirit.
What do you find most challenging about being a caregiver?
Trying to keep the individual motivated, especially with Hospice patients. I am always trying to think of new things & pray a lot.
What do you find most rewarding about being a caregiver?
Having the client's do things that they hadn't done in past. Getting a hard to eat or hard to walk client - eating again or walking.
What are your interests, when not working?
Spending time with my grandkids.
What are your plans for the future?
Taking classes at night currently.
