Alzheimer's Disease/Dementia Care
More than half a million people in Illinois suffer from memory loss, caused by Alzheimer's Disease, Parkinson's Disease or another type of dementia.
Assisting a loved one with memory loss presents many unique challenges. Chicagoland Caregivers strives to assist memory loss clients and their family caregivers with tools and resources for both the emotional and physical care needs.
There is no cure for memory loss but the latest research does present methods for slowing memory loss and possibly preventing memory loss. The local Chicago chapter of the Alzheimer's Association offers "Brain-Healthy" lifestyle workshops and many of the local senior organizations and geriatric doctor practices offer memory-loss educational events and support groups.
Chicagoland Caregivers offers a Healthy Aging Newsletter to keep you informed about local senior news and programs. Click here to subscribe.
The latest research on memory loss care and prevention focuses on 4 areas:
- Nutrition
- Stress Reduction (the stress hormone cortisol is toxic to brain neurons responsible for memory and emotion)
- Exercise: Physical, Mental, Meditation (Mind/Body)
- Pharmaceutical Medications
Chicagoland Caregivers will include appropriate activities for memory loss care in the client's Care Plan and introduce clients to memory tools from Chicagoland Caregivers' Healthy Aging Kit.
These include:
- The Best Friend's Book of Alzheimer's Activities
- The Better Memory Kit
- Sound therapy: CD's for relaxation
- Massage therapy: By Licensed Massage Therapist
Chicagoland Caregivers also connects clients with memory loss to resources such as Support Groups, exercise classes, and educational conferences. Caregivers are able to accompany or escort memory loss clients to these activities.
